John Hendy, QC, spoke to the mass gathering organised by the Transport and General Workers’ Union in the Royal Square at lunchtime and told them that it was the opinion of both himself and professor Sandra Fredman of Oxford University that the new laws breach international conventions.

The two legal experts have prepared an opinion on how the laws breach the conventions, and their work is being sent to the UN-sponsored International Labour Organisation, which will be asked to express its views of the proposals.

The legal opinion and a petition containing more than 1,000 signatures was handed over to Jersey Democratic Alliance leader Deputy Geoff Southern.

He is fighting the proposals on behalf of the union and all workers in the Island.

He urged union members to show their anger when they go to the polls next month, saying that he, Denise Carroll and Senator Stuart Syvret would all fight to maintain the rights of workers.

The Deputy drew a strong round of applause when he said that the laws were ‘completely unbalanced against you, the employee’.
