After years of low-duty prices, recent years have seen prices in the Island rise and rise to the point where this week they have overtaken outlets across the rest of Britain.
Yesterday supermarket chains Asda and Tesco, which have over 250 outlets nationwide between them, slashed four pence off the price of unleaded, making it 79.9p per litre and dramatically lowered the UK average, according the AA, to 82.7p.
A quick phone round the petrol stations in the Island shows that Roberts, at Springfield, is charging 94.9p (which goes down to 89.2p with a discount card), Le Riche at Five Oaks and St John is charging 91.9p, Three Mile at Maufant is charging 92.3p and St Mary’s Garage is charging 92.9p.
Freelance, in Trinity, is charging 94.2p with a 15 per cent discount, which takes its price down to 80p per litre.
