Hill climb records fall – just before the showers

Before the rain set in two records were lowered, both in car classes.

Chris Le Bonniec reset the modified saloons record from 45.91 to 45.67 and Neil Wakeling recaptured the production saloons unlimited record he previously held.

His time of 49.07 knocked a huge chunk from Alan Dix’s record of 49.78.

With new tyres fitted to the OMS racing car Glyn Moignard threw down the gauntlet to this year’s fastest driver Richard Twinam.

Moignard blitzed his personal best time of 44.33 sec with an amazing 42.65 sec in practice! However, practice runs do not count for results so he would have to repeat the feat in the official runs to have a chance of beating Twinam.

Unfortunately Moignard went slower on his only dry run, setting a 43.08, still inside his personal best – but would it be enough? Twinam stopped the clock at 43.07 to take another fastest time of the day for cars this year.

Moignard must have been disappointed to lose by just 1/100th, but at least he knows he has the speed to win next year.

Fastest time of the day on two wheels went to Mick Bertram on the 580 cc KTM.

With the rain just starting towards the end of the 450 cc-bike class, after Bertram had run, some would say he was lucky.

In truth he set his best time at the hill for four years, lowering his personal best from 45.69 to 45.31 in the process and he thoroughly deserved the win for being so quick so soon in the day.

Many of the larger engined bikes didn’t even complete one official run as the rain had set in before they came to the line.

The sun shone later once the rain had passed and the hill did dry in certain places but remained extremely slippy in others, ideal conditions for rally cars.

As usual in these conditions Wayne Le Bailly was the star of the show sliding his 250 horsepower MK1 Escort all the way from Radio Corner to the top bend.

The 125 cc kart drivers all fitted wets apart from Darryl Morris who kept the slick tyres on.

Over the last two runs there was a great battle between Morris, Bonhomme and Vardon.

Vardon was the fastest in the end with a time of 46.10 and with regular fastest 250 cc kart driver Nigel Davis not waiting for the sun to come out, Vardon was fastest kart overall as well.

JMC & LCC officials thanked Troys Estate Agency, Normandy Rescue, paramedic John Sutherland, Trinity Honorary Police and residents.
