The Housing president spoke out today against what he described as ‘a price-fixing cartel’ after announcing that his committee would relax restrictions on new dentists coming into the Island.

Deputy Le Main said that the move to grant more J-category licences, which are given to essential employees, was designed to bring down prices and give Islanders, and especially old people, a better value and more wide-ranging service.

However, Clare Morvan, the vice president of the Jersey Dental Association, said the ‘policy U-turn’ by the committee would hurt the consumer and lower the quality of service currently on offer.

She added that the extra competition was more likely to put prices up than bring them down and, more generally, that increased immigration would push up house, and other, prices.
