The tide was coming in and could have covered the cold and shaken woman if it had not been for the painstaking work of acting harbourmaster Peter Lawrence who kept asking for her position and the Jersey Fire and Rescue crew who located her and brought her to shore.

Shortly before 9 pm the woman, who is an Island resident, used her mobile phone to call for help after she realised that she was in danger of being caught out by the incoming tide.

Station officer Stuart Evans, who co-ordinated the rescue effort involving a team of six officers, said the woman was trapped on rocks half way between Seymour Tower and the slipway.

Leading firefighter Dave Dingle launched the inshore rescue boat with two crew and a search began in the dark.
