Traditionally Miss Battle has travelled to Alderney, Le Havre and Spalding to take part in their summer carnival events, but cutbacks in spending have meant that the traditional overseas trips have been cancelled.

Despite the fact that Victoria Keen’s role in the Battle will now be played out entirely in Jersey, representatives from Alderney, Le Havre and Ramsgate will be in the Island this week to take part in Thursday’s parade along Victoria Avenue.

Battle of Flowers chairman Bob Pallot said that the decision was down to the association’s financial situation.

He said: ‘The decision was taken by the council when doing the budgets in order to save money.

It is nice to have an Island representative, but we had to make cutbacks.

‘We have still invited all the other carnival princesses to come over and the friendship is ongoing.

Next year we will look at it again, but this year we must stand by the decision.’
