In a typically intense Le Quesne-style challenge, the Jersey quartet completely outplayed a Guernsey team skipped by Dave Trebert, opening up a 7-0 lead after five ends, and scoring a five on the 11th end to lead, 14-4.
Continuing to dominate, they were completely in charge at 20-5 after 16 ends, and were not worried when Guernsey scored a few consolation shots over the last five ends to make the score more respectable at 21-13.
In today’s semi final, Nixon’s men will take on the legendary Weale brothers of Presteigne, who won the Welsh fours title for the sixth time last August.
Brian, Stuart, David and world-ranked Robert Weale are hoping to win the British title for the third time, but they know will find the Channel Islanders a tough proposition.
Jamie MacDonald impressed spectators in the under-25 singles, before he was pipped, 21-18, by Scottish junior champion Stuart Babbington, while Quémard paid the penalty for a slow start against world indoor singles champion Paul Foster in the semi final of the senior singles.
Foster was 12-0 ahead before AQ started to find his touch, but the Jersey champion hit form mid-game, and did well to claw back from 1-14 to 10-18, but the dour Scot – who used to be known as ‘The Glower of Scotland’, sealed victory with a double and a single.
That convincing fours victory over Guernsey was all the more satisfying after Jersey lost to their rivals in the semi final of the pairs and quarter finals of the triples.
In the pairs, Bill Bowman and Gus McKinnon, who defeated Daniel de la Mare and Matt Le Ber in the CI championships last September, shook hands after 20 ends, with the score 19-10 in Guernsey’s favour.
‘We have no complaints,’ said Gus afterwards.
‘Matt was superb – he just wouldn’t let us keep any shots, and was simply walking on water.’ In the triples, Steve Hind, Lowery and Quémard were never in the hunt against Mike Merrien and his two sons, Alan and Paul, after dropping two fives for starters, and trailing 22-8 after nine ends.
The Jersey trio scored on six of the next eight ends, but they managed merely to make the score slightly more respectable at 26-16.
