Former Island goalkeeper Jamie Brewster led the Saints, who are currently top of Division I, to a nine-wicket victory over Division III Walkovers at Grainville following a hard-hitting undefeated 62 which included four sixes and five fours.
Brewster’s performance won him the man-of-the-match award chosen by Springfield and Abacus cricketer Peter Canham.
Walkovers, a club formed in 2002 that most certainly do not live up to their name, were put in to bat by St Ouen skipper Rob Tewkesbury and they closed their 15 overs on 121 for five wickets.
Mark Langridge top-scored with an unbeaten 24 after he and Steven Mitchell put on an unbroken sixth-wicket stand of 44.
Earlier Bradley Vautier played some good strokes in compiling 22 while opener Tom Perchard contributed with 16.
To their credit, Walkers batted sensibly and they still had five wickets in hand at the conclusion.
They were kept in check early on by some tight bowling by Barry Middleton and Marico Kemp.
St Ouen reached their target with 29 balls to spare, only Tewkesbury losing his wicket.
Brewster played the leading role partnered by the patience of the experienced Ward Jenner (35).
Skipper Tewkesbury said: ‘Walkovers were unknown to us and full credit to them for their performance.
At one time they looked as if they were going to get less than a hundred runs but they flourished towards the end.
‘Even if they would have reached 140 or 150 I still think we would have beaten them.
We have a lot of strength in depth and the way Jamie was hitting the ball who knows how many he might have scored had we batted first.
‘Jamie was superb and if it wasn’t for family commitments I’m sure he could get into the Island team.
He hit everything from the middle of the bat while Ward, at the other end, helped keep the scoreboard ticking over.
‘I’ve got a great squad of 20 players this season and we’re rotated players and it has gone well.
We’ve won all seven games we’ve played and our target is to continue winning and hopefully win the Evening League Division I title as well.’ Walkovers captain John Patterson said: ‘We did our best but unfortunately on the night it wasn’t good enough.
But it was a tall order as we were playing the current Division I leaders.
‘We’ve had a great run in the competition and we’ve thoroughly enjoyed it.
We had good support too and the players gave a good account of themselves.
‘We knew that 121 was defendable but it was always getable.
We needed early wickets and unfortunately they didn’t come.
When Jamie Brewster started to hit out we knew it was over for us.
His innings was explosive and it ended our hopes.
‘Following our league defeat by Hautlians on Monday our priority now is to win every league match and hopefully that will gain us promotion to Division II for next season.’
