Deputy Gerald Voisin, president of the Economic Development Committee, believes that the industry deserves some help to get back to the ‘heyday of the 1980s’.

Tourism has been in steady decline since the early 1990s but it was recently announced that tourism figures could grow in 2005 for the first time in a decade.

This is partly because of the early Easter and the Liberation celebrations, but also because there are more low-cost airlines flying into the Island.

Deputy Voisin said that he was not suggesting the tourism industry should start paying less, but said that those prepared to invest in creating new facilities and attractions could get some assistance in the form of being able to offset profits against the initial capital outlay.

‘Now that we have the economic growth plan under our belts, we can start meeting the industry to see whether we can encourage additional investment into the tourism industry through attractions and facilities.’
