They made it six National Inter-County Championship victories on the trot at High Wycombe last weekend with back-to-back victories over table-topping Buckinghamshire 2nds and then Sussex 3rds.
The impressive 8-7 win over Buckinghamshire, followed by an 11-4 victory over Susssex, almost certainly assures Jersey of second place in Division III – although Bucks have lost twice they have won a greater number of matches by 10-5 or better to take all three points on offer.
Jersey have collected only two points from four of their wins.
And even though Bucks and Jersey meet again at the New Gilson Hall tomorrow, team manager Ian Coombs-Goodfellow says he’s ‘fairly sure’ they can’t take the title.
On Saturday Jersey took all four of the men’s and ladies singles matches against Bucks.
At No 1 Chris Cotillard came through a tough three-setter while No 2 Gavin Carter had a straight forward win.
In the ladies Kerry Coombs-Goodfellow at No 1 and young Kim Ashton at No 2 had comfortable, straight-set victories.
But then Bucks took three of the four opening doubles with the only Jersey win coming from Cotillard and Dave Luce.
With the score 5-3 to Jersey the next round of doubles matches was crucial – and Jersey rose to the occasion.
In the men’s doubles there were victories for Cotillard and Luce and Carter and extremely fit debutant Nick Thorne.
Coombs-Goodfellow and Natalie White won their ladies doubles and although Jodie Mercier and Tracy Hudson went down Jersey had now secured the eight matches for an overall victory.
Unfortunately they then lost all three mixed doubles.
Sunday’s clash with Sussex followed a similar pattern.
Cotillard got Jersey off to a good start again, winning 15-13 in the third set.
Carter in the men’s and Coombs-Goodfellow and Ashton in the ladies took comfortable, straight set victories.
Then Jersey took six of the eight men’s and ladies doubles matches.
Afterwards team manager Ian Coombs-Goodfellow said: ‘It’s a tremendous achievement to have won all six matches, especially when they have all been played on the mainland and usually back-to-back over a weekend.
‘Unfortunately we have not been able to field our strongest team all season.
I’ve no doubt that if we had we’d have comfortably won the division.’ Jersey’s last fixtures of the season are at the New Gilson Hall against Bucks tomorrow and Middlesex on Sunday.
