It would mean that sending a book would cost less, but lighter and bulkier packages, such as posters, would cost more.

If introduced, the new pricing structure would mirror that of the Royal Mail, which yesterday announced it was joining many other postal services around the world by intending to charge its customers on the size of their parcels.

Under the new proposals, which will be introduced next year if approved by regulator Postcomm, someone sending an A4 piece of paper in an A4 envelope will be charged more than if someone folds the paper and places it in a smaller, standard-sized envelope, even if they weigh the same.

Jersey Post is currently in negotiations with the Royal Mail on whether to adopt the new pricing policy.

But this morning a spokesman for Jersey Post announced that it would be ‘unlikely’ for the company to maintain the traditional method of charging if the Royal Mail goes ahead with its plans.
