The Deputy said that during the last few weeks he had been contacted by a number of people concerned about some elderly people living in totally unsuitable private accommodation.

When asked by concerned friends or relatives why they did not contact the Housing Department, some of them had said they did not want to be a burden on the States.

‘Sadly, some elderly people put up with cold and damp homes which do not meet modern requirements because they are too proud to seek our help or mistakenly believe they may not qualify,’ said Deputy Le Main .

What some of those people did not realise, he said, was that if they had savings of £50,000 in the bank, that did not disqualify them from applying for States’ accommodation.
