The charity’s chief executive, Sir Nick Young, will fly in especially for Sunday’s grand finale to the appeal at the Hotel de France and will be presented with a cheque by the Bailiff, Sir Philip Bailhache.

Sir Nick’s presence underlines the charity’s gratitude for the response by Islanders to the Jersey Asia Relief Appeal since its launch just over a month ago.

The States immediately gave £500,000 and Islanders have raised nearly three times that amount again.

The emergency appeal draws to a close this weekend although fund-raising efforts will go on and money that continues to come in will still be donated to the charity.

Appeal chairman Mike Wavell says that Sir Nick’s presence at the weekend finale is an honour for the Island.
