It is hoped that Sir Nicholas Young , the chief executive, or someone else at the top of the charity will be at a special event on Sunday 6 February to mark the end of the Jersey Asia Relief Appeal.

Since the start of the appeal, the public have raised £1.27 million, while the States have also given £500,000.

It is thought that the final combined total will reach nearly £2 million.

The finale to the appeal will be held in the Great Hall at the Hotel de France, which is being made available free of charge by the owners.

An hour-long programme including Thai dancing, singing by the Beaulieu School choir and music from acclaimed pianist Christopher George is being put together around a keynote speech from the Red Cross and the presentation of the final cheque to the charity by the Bailiff.

There will also be an ‘act of commitment’ which has been penned by the Catholic Dean, Canon Nicholas France, to underline the Island’s ongoing support both for south-east Asia and for other areas of the developing world.
