Having won all four trials races last weekend, Carter’s second place in the fifth trial – he was beaten by Ian Simpson – on Saturday morning, was sufficient to clinch top place without competing in the last two races – and if he sails as well in next weekend’s standard rig trials, he could well qualify for that category too, although he can only compete in one category in Shetland.

Speller’s second overall place (radial) was in the balance until the last race of the seven, and until he crossed the line first in the seventh he was neck-and-neck with Tom Leveridge, who eventually finished third overall.

In the standard trials, Joel Lucas won race one, with Carter, Martin Speller and Simpson finishing second, third and fourth.

Race two was won by Jeff Speller with Carter squeezing into second place ahead of Martin Speller.

Malcolm Le Couteur was fourth.

The course for race three was moved as the wind direction had changed, and some confusion at the first mark meant the race had to be re-started.

Carter led all the way and Lucas had to be content with second place – and that is the current state of play, with Jeff Speller lying third so far.

The standard fleet takes to the water again next weekend, in St Aubin’s Bay, for the four remaining trials.
