In a two-page spread in the Times, Mr Muirhead mercilessly pokes fun at Channel, his heavily pregnant co-presenter, Kristina Moore, regional television in general and himself – under the headline ‘Confessions of a local TV anchorman’.

He describes Ms Moore as ‘fawning and wooden’ and reveals that when viewers thought they were chatting cosily with the microphones turned off, they were, in reality, ‘trading verbal blows through grimaces hoping that lip-readers were preoccupied elsewhere’.

Ms Moore, who is on maternity leave and is due to give birth to her first child at the end of this month, today described the article as ‘not very nice’.

‘I feel that I helped him and gave him encouragement when he was struggling,’ she said.

‘I am deeply disappointed.’
