Home Affairs and the Magistrates have been asked to look at the current system for banning drivers caught over the speed limit and see if the 30 mph ‘cushion’ should be lowered.

In dealing with an appeal against a Magistrate’s Court decision, the Royal Court said they felt that the ‘cushion’ was too high, and invited Home Affairs and the Magistrate to review the arrangements.

The court’s comments were made in the case of David Taylor (20), who unsuccessfully appealed against his two-month ban for driving at 62 mph on Victoria Avenue, but won the right to have his licence back without taking a test again after an application by Advocate Rebecca Juste.

His ban is due to expire this month.
