Emeraude Freight are due to start daily services using a large ferry that will be capable of carrying containers, lorries and vans.

And deliveries of fresh fruit and vegetables from French markets are also likely to be brought to Jersey on a daily basis.

It is even possible that the new vessel might end up exporting Jersey’s waste for disposal in France.

If successful, the new service could drive down prices in the Island’s shops and help to reduce the high inflation rate.

Retailers will now be able to order direct from Europe.

The official announcement of the new service will not be made for another month at least, and as a result Gordon Forrest, from Emeraude’s senior management, did not wish to comment.

Senior politicians in Jersey, Guernsey and France are fully aware of the plans and are understood to be totally supportive.
