Pressure group the Jersey Air Passengers’ Association this morning backed the British Airports Authority, which has strongly criticised proposals to axe the service.

The BAA, which runs Gatwick, has written to the Strategic Rail Authority, accusing it of ‘murdering’ the Gatwick Express in a ‘misjudged short-term’ strategy based on ‘a series of analytical errors and emissions’.

The SRA, which has responsibility for planning Britain’s rail network, has proposed replacing the 30- minute direct service between London Victoria and the airport with a slower link that would stop at stations on the way and continue to Brighton.

But JAPA, like the BAA, is not happy.

‘If Gatwick is to be our main access to London, then we need a premium service and we need to object if it is going to be downgraded,’ said the association’s chairman, the Rev Anthony Swindell.
