Just five minutes remained when Ian Solomon called a halt to the Dog Club Trophy match between the Grouville and Portuguese Club reserve teams when two of four players he had sent off threatened him and disrupted the match by kicking footballs on to the pitch.

Grouville were 3-1 up at the time and it was Portuguese players who were disrupting the game from the touchline.

Solomon said: ‘If the abuse was in reverse there would be hell to pay.

The players gave me no choice, one came right up to me and almost stuck his finger in my face.

One called me an English w***** but I’m not English I’m from Liverpool! ‘It all kicked off just five minutes from the end.

It was all very funny too because one of the players sent off was dancing round with just his boxer shorts on! ‘It was so funny but totally out of order.’ Portuguese secretary Vasco Pinto said: ‘I was not at the game, I was with the first team.

I’m disappointed with what I heard and we are discussing it at a meeting tonight.

If disciplinary action is taken it is likely that they will not play for this club again.’ Grouville manager Colin Patching said: ‘I was not in earshot to hear what was said but there were two or three players causing a problem and the ref was well within his rights to do what he did.

‘It’s sad and unusual to see an incident like this and I was pleased with the way my players handled themselves against undisciplined opponents.’ Solomon has reported the incident to the Jersey Football Association, although it is the Combination which will decide what to do about the match because it is their competition.

If the Portuguese Club are found to be at fault it seems likely that Grouville will be awarded the victory.

In a tempestuous match Portuguese Club’s Manuel Rodrigues and Grouville’s Matt Browning had been sent off in the first half after raising their hands towards each other.

Ricardo Vieira was cautioned for diving and seven minutes from the end Ruben Fernandes was sent off for allegedly elbowing an opponent.

Vieira walked off behind him and was given a second yellow card, resulting in a red.

It was then that the trouble started and the match was abandoned two minutes later.
