JERSEY’S bowlers sat around a table in the clubroom at Victoria Park yesterday, taking in what they had achieved in their group round-robin, and building up for their quarter final encounter with New Zealand tomorrow, writes David Rhys Jones.
Christine Grimes, Gean O’Neil, Karina Bisson and Suzie Dingle had just edged home, 16-14, against Namibia, and had emerged from their qualifying group with a confidence-boosting 100 per cent record.
Their last game was a see-saw affair, in which both sides took the lead in turn, but a four on the 11th end saw Jersey take a useful 12-7 lead, which the Namibians eroded gradually until the scores were level at 14-14 after 16 ends.
Two singles were enough to give Jersey, who were already assured of their place in the last eight, a victory that kept their unbeaten record intact, but they are sure to find the Kiwis/Welsh a tougher proposition.
‘I’m proud of the way the girls have played in the group, and hopeful that one more win will give them a bronze medal,’ said Liz Cole, Jersey’s team manager.
Alison Camacho, who was sixth in her singles group, was preparing for the next phase of minor place play-offs, in which she is hoping to finish in 21st position, ahead of Spain’s Patsy Fisher, Japan’s Junko Tahara and Danna Chiu from Hong Kong, who finished sixth in their respective groups.
The quarter finalists in the singles include representatives of the four home countries, South Africa, Australia, Israel and the Philippines.
