Parishes aim to resist Norman conquest

Grouville Common is hosting the sixth Jeux Intervilles games in a year when the Island celebrates severing its ancestral ties with Normandy in favour of allegiance to the Crown.

But tomorrow’s contest will be conducted in the name of friendship as eight parishes and their Normandy twin towns lock horns.

A total of 128 competitors will be involved with traditional games including a tug-of-war, a sandcastle-building contest and water games.

More than 300 French supporters as well as hundreds of Islanders are expected to cheer on their teams during the day-long event, which will be opened by the Bailiff, Sir Philip Bailhache, at 10.15 am.
