The opening men’s doubles matches ended with Guernsey taking a 5-4 lead after some close and exciting play – and if one of the games which went to three sets had gone the way of Gavin Carter and Clive Dunford, as it so easily might, Jersey would have taken a 5-4 lead.In the ladies’ section the score was 6-3 to the home side.
Tracy Hudson and Sarah Groves were edged out in a three-setter by Lynn Guilbert and Sadie Siviter, but Kim Ashton and Mariana Agathangalou won all three of their matches.Annabel Lea and Dimple Mukhti, who were two of the new caps in the Jersey team, played very well together even though they didn’t win a match.Gavin Carter and Tracy Hudson and Chris Cotillard and Mariana Agathangalou played in the A section of the mixed doubles, and although the latter pair took Kevin Le Moigne and Elena Johnson to a third set, they were beaten in the decider.Jersey, however, won the B section, with Ian Coombs-Goodfellow and Kim Ashton winning both their matches and Chris Cotillard and Sarah Groves winning one of theirs and losing by a single point in a three-setter against Chris Dragun and Lisa Hayward.Jersey were defeated in the C section by three games to one, with Colin Hardwidge and Dimple Mukhti going close in one game, losing 17-14 in a three-setter.Kim Ashton was unlucky not to have clinched the trophy for the player of the day, being beaten on games countback by Guernsey’s Darren Le Tissier. The Jersey players were: Gavin Carter, Clive Dunford, Ian Coombs-Goodfellow, Chris Cotillard, Colin Hardwidge, Chris Agathangalou, Mariana Agathangalou, Kim Ashton, Tracy Hudson, Sarah Groves, Annabel Lea and Dimple Mukhti, with Trish O’Brien and Michael Stock as reserves.
