Senator steps down
SENATOR Christopher Lakeman , the politician at the heart of the current government reforms, has resigned from the States 20 months before his term of office expires.
The Senator confirmed this morning that today's States session was his last.
He has announced his resignation two-thirds of the way through his six-year term, prompting a by-election.
He was due to make an official announcement to the House at the end of today's sitting.Senator Lakeman has blamed the decision on the pressures of balancing his two jobs of president of the Privileges and Procedures Committee and as a partner at law firm Carey Olsen - although he emphatically denied that he had been placed under any pressure by his fellow partners.
