Deputy Gerald Voisin, president of the Economic Development Committee, says the Island’s high cost base is a result of its ‘significant economic growth’ over the last 20 years, rather than price fixing. The committee is about to lodge the Competition Law, which if approved will prohibit arrangements between businesses that hinder competition and monopolies that abuse their position.A number of States Members, including Finance president Senator Terry Le Sueur, say the law is urgently needed to address the high prices paid by Jersey consumers. But Deputy Voisin, in a speech to the Jersey branch of the Institute of Directors, said he believes there is very little likelihood that Jersey consumers will ever be able to buy groceries at prices offered by UK supermarkets.
