Children lose play area as repair costs mount

Since refurbishment work started on the play area in Pillar Gardens and Nicholson Close – formerly part of Nicholson Park – in June, vandals have been wreaking havoc on an almost daily basis.

Housing’s maintenance manager, Carl Mavity , said that with costs approaching £20,000, and the contractor considering employing security guards, it was time to call it a day.

‘We did not feel that the public should be bearing the costs,’ he said.Housing president Deputy Terry Le Main said that his committee regretted closing the play area, but the continued vandalism and wanton destruction left them with no choice.
