Wills law reform

Under proposals put forward by the Legislation Committee, illegitimate children will have the same rights to inheritance as children born in wedlock. The historic rights of widows and children to a fixed portion of a dead man’s estate will also be swept away.

Instead, the committee want to leave it up to an individual to dispose of their moveable estate to whomever they wish. This will be subject to the Royal Court having the power to make an order to provide ‘a proper sum’ for the maintenance and support of dependants.
