New plan on population unveiled next week

Their much anticipated proposals will be lodged with the States on the same day that Members are due to debate a proposition on the issue by Senator Stuart Syvret. His proposal asks P and R to prepare reports on the different population policy options, on the impact on the housing market of abolishing qualifications and on the environmental impact of each of the options. The last time population was discussed in the States the debate ended controversially and acrimoniously when Deputy Robert Duhamel changed his vote to effectively defeat P and R’s proposals because the vote was then tied. The committee had wanted to do away with housing qualifications but a number of Members claimed that there was insufficient information on the potential impact of such a move to make a decision.P and R are keeping their proposals close to their chest and their response to Senator Syvret’s proposition will also not be known until it is lodged on Tuesday.
