Scaffold attack ‘could be attempted murder’

Ricardo Jorge Encarnacao Dias (30), of Devonshire Lane, appeared in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday and admitted committing a grave and criminal assault on Amandio Moinhos while they were at work last Friday.Mr Moinhos was rushed to hospital with serious head injuries after the attack and is now in a satisfactory condition.Police legal adviser Laurence O’Donnell said Dias had been working for Jersey Carpet and Office Supplies in Kensington Place for three years.

Mr Moinhos was a manager there, and had worked for the company for ten years.Mr O’Donnell said that Dias had told Mr Moinhos he was going to kill him.

He then went out of the room and returned with some scaffolding, hitting Mr Moinhos on the skull with it.He said: ‘His skull was fractured to a considerable degree and when he fell to the floor, Dias kicked him.’Mr O’Donnell told the court that Dias had admitted intend to kill Mr Moinhos and that the prosecution were considering whether the charge should be attempted murder.

He said that due to the seriousness of the offence the case should go to the Royal Court.Defending, Advocate Sue Pearmain said her client wanted to enter a guilty plea as soon as possible and accepted that the case would have to go up to the higher court. She added that there had been provocation in the case because Mr Moinhos had told her client he was going to sack him.The Assistant Magistrate, Ian Christmas, declined jurisdiction and remanded Dias in custody until 21 July when he is due to re-appear in the Magistrate’s Court.
