The average UK motorist will spend more time in the car than at the beach or having a picnic, according to new figures.
Brits will spend over 103 hours behind the wheel during the summer months – with more than two million drivers spending over 10 days in the car, according to research by AA Tyres.
In contrast, they’ll spend just 54 hours at the beach or 57 hours having a picnic over the course of the assumed 12-week summer period.
A survey of 16,772 drivers found that seven per cent will find themselves driving for over a week and a half this summer.
Mark Shankland, managing director of AA Tyres, said: “Whether it’s the reduced cost of buying cars thanks to the boom in car finance or that we simply rely more on our vehicles for everyday tasks, Brits are driving more and more every year.
“This seems to be the case all year round. Even during summer, when you’d expect families to be jetting off to far-flung locations, Brits are still indebted to their motors. Part of this will be down to the reduced value of sterling and the spiraling popularity of UK vacations, which many drivers will use their car for.”
The survey discovered that Brits will spend more time watching television or reading than visiting relatives or meeting others at the pub.
