Richard Hammond and his wife have announced their split after an “amazing 28 years together”.
The 55-year-old TV presenter, known for motoring shows Top Gear and The Grand Tour, tied the knot with newspaper columnist Amanda “Mindy” Hammond in 2002.
They shared a statement on X on Thursday saying: “A little update from us; this Christmas we were together as a family and this year we will still be a family but just structured a bit differently.
“Our marriage is coming to end, but we’ve had an amazing 28 years together and two incredible daughters.
“We will always be in each other’s lives and are proud of the family we created.
“We won’t be commenting further and sincerely hope that our privacy and that of our children will be respected at this time. With Love, Richard and Mindy.”
The couple have two daughters, Izzy and Willow.
Hammond was supported by his wife in 2006 following a high-speed crash on Top Gear which left him with serious injuries.
“Apparently she roared and screamed and swore at me ‘don’t you dare die’ and that’s when I turned back from this tree in my dream and that’s when I woke,” he said.
“My last thought took me somewhere I love and somewhere I’m happy. So I’m not scared of this old tree (in the Lake District). I pass it regularly, most months I come up here and walk, and every time I pass it, I do feel comforted.
“I know it’s where I’ll go. It’s still here and I’m still here. But it does speak of the importance of place and the joy of being connected with a place.”
The incident left him with head injuries, but he made a full recovery and returned to the show in early 2007.
In 2017, Mindy said that she “almost went to pieces” following a second crash during the The Grand Tour filming in Switzerland, which caused Hammond’s car to burst him into flames.
The presenter, originally from Birmingham, and Mindy lived together in Cheltenham for many years, where they had horses, dogs, cats, sheep and chickens along with a collection of vehicles.
They later moved together to Herefordshire.
Hammond started off at cable and satellite channel Men and Motors, before going on to present Top Gear, which he left in 2015 with May and Clarkson.
In 2018, Mindy claimed in the Sunday Express that she was gassed at a holiday home villa in France, where she said that cash and her daughter Willow’s watch were stolen.
She also said that they employed a security guard after the incident, and that police arrested the two burglars within 48 hours as they were caught on CCTV.
Hammond hosts the podcast Who We Are Now With Izzy & Richard Hammond along with his daughter, and his family have appeared on his Discovery+ series Richard Hammond’s Workshop, about him starting a restoration business in Herefordshire.
May, Hammond and Clarkson put out what they called the final episode of The Grand Tour on Prime Video in September.
