Former Really Wild Show presenters Michaela Strachan and Chris Packham will reunite for a one-off online show to raise awareness about the endangered kiwi bird.
The former hosts of the BBC show will front The Kiwi Wild Show, to draw attention to the plight of the national bird of New Zealand, which has lost 99% of its number over the past 80 years, with just 50,000 remaining in the wild.
Segments of the Kiwi Wild Show will feature Strachan as she follows Operation Nest Egg – a mission to deliver eggs to an incubation centre, where the eggs are protected until they hatch.
The baby kiwi birds are then released into a crèche to grow stronger and once they reach adult size, they are released back into the wild.
Strachan said: “It’s very exciting to co-host the Kiwi Wild Show with Chris as it’s an incredible opportunity to highlight the amazing work that the charity Kiwis for Kiwi does to rescue and protect this endangered, quirky, lovable bird.
“It’s a fact that without help, the kiwi could become extinct in our lifetime and we simply can’t let that happen. We have the chance to act now, and make sure the kiwi isn’t resigned to the history books.”
“Upon learning we’ve lost 99% of the population of this intelligent and adventurous bird in just 80 years, made me realise it’s a race against time to protect these astonishing birds.
“Who wants to live in a world without the kiwi bird? Not me, that’s for sure.”
He continued: “The Kiwi Wild Show offers us a platform to educate everyone, from all over the world on how one of the most unusual birds on this planet is on the brink of extinction and what’s more, how we can all take small steps to help preserve these wonderful little creatures.”
