Hello Girls in 1976

Hello Girls in 1976 (37637089)

IT was “Goodbye” to the “Hello girls” at the West Telephone Exchange in late February 1976, as the last manually operated exchange in the Island went automatic.

The changeover to automatic began in 1959 when the new Central Exchange in Minden Place was opened, followed by the South Exchange in 1966 and the North and East Exchanges following in 1975.

Pictured just two days before automation are: Wendy McQuaid, Nan Harris, Maureen La Bouette, Ann Rousseau, Daphne Baudains and Joan Ward with supervisor Ann Hounsell.
