Flooded Gorey Common (37584012)

THE worst flood in living memory at Gorey came after a night of freak weather hit the Island on Saturday 18 February in 1978. The flood took everyone by surprise as at about 8.30am on the Sunday the water was only a few inches deep, but two hours later it was between two and three feet deep and dozens of homes were flooded in Gorey Village leaving at least 50 people homeless. Firemen, RRB workers and nearby farmers brought in tractors and pumps in a frantic battle to reduce the floodwater. Pictured is the flooded Gorey Common alongside the main road.
