As head of asset management at Capital International (Jersey) Limited, Antony Kelsey is focused on helping clients cut through complexity and invest with confidence. JEP Business sat down with him to talk about growth, the importance of independence and why the human touch matters
You talk about “making money work better” but what does that mean in practice?
It sounds simple but it’s not just about performance and growing client wealth. Of course, delivering strong returns is our primary goal, but it’s also about working closely with intermediaries and clients, shaping a suitable solution and ultimately helping people feel confident and informed. If we can offer clarity and confidence, then we re doing our job properly.
Capital International Limited has grown significantly over the years. How has the business evolved?
Capital International Limited was first established in 1996. It started off as a stockbroking business but has since become a financial services group, offering an investment platform, corporate banking as well as asset management services.
We now have more than 260 people across Jersey, the Isle of Man, South Africa, Dubai and London and oversee around $6.5 billion in assets. Despite our size, the focus for us is still on delivering a personal, high-quality service.
The scale of course helps us, in that we are able to offer clients reassurance, but it doesn’t define us. We like to offer the boutique feel where understanding our clients and building strong relationships remains an important part of our proposition.
You have established an experienced team here in Jersey. What makes that presence here locally valuable?
It’s hugely important. Being physically based in Jersey means we’re not trying to support clients from a distance; we’re part of the local ecosystem. We work closely with intermediaries, and that day-to-day interaction makes a real difference. It allows us to be more responsive and generally more in tune with what clients need.
How would you describe your investment philosophy in simple terms?
We back our own thinking. We do the research ourselves, build our own portfolios and take responsibility for the outcomes. That independence is really important because it means we’re not just following the crowd and we can easily demonstrate how we are delivering value to our clients.
Importantly, we’re always thinking about the long term and what’s going to deliver strong, sustainable results over time, not just what looks good today.
Sustainability is a growing focus for investors. How are you approaching it?
It’s become part of how we think, rather than a separate box to tick. We see sustainability as closely linked to long-term performance. Companies investing responsibly today are often the ones best placed to succeed tomorrow, so that thinking runs across everything we do.
Our Better World strategy is the clearest expression of that. It’s designed to deliver strong returns while also contributing to positive global progress. More and more, we’re seeing that investors want their portfolios to reflect their values, and we’re focused on helping them do that in a way that is both meaningful and credible.
You emphasise personal service. Why is that still so important?
Investing, either for yourself or on behalf of your client, can feel quite overwhelming at times, so being able to speak to someone who knows you and understands your situation is invaluable.
We’ve deliberately avoided call centres and chatbots. They might be cost-cutters for some businesses, but we know our clients well: they want to deal with real people. Having a dedicated relationship team means our experts are only a phone call away. This helps us to build trust with our clients over the long term.
How do you make sure you’re staying aligned with what clients actually want?
We actively ask them. Our Voice of the Client Forum brings feedback directly into the business, so clients genuinely have a say in how we evolve. It keeps us honest and makes sure we’re not making assumptions.
Finally, what would you say to someone considering Capital International
I’d say just have a conversation with us. You don’t need to have everything figured out. If we can help bring a bit of clarity and direction, then that’s a great place to start. We truly believe is important for clients to feel comfortable when investing and that is best achieved but coming to meet or talk with us.
