PICTURE yourself locking your front door behind you and swiping the keycard to open your hotel room in a sun-soaked destination just a few short hours later. No overnight stay in Gatwick or Heathrow, no anxiously checking the forecast for fog, no holiday spending money wasted entertaining the kids on a five-hour layover. Just you and your loved ones, arriving relaxed and ready to start making holiday memories.

Since the world of travel was turned upside down in 2020, demand for flying direct has, quite literally, taken off. More than 6,500 Islanders opted for this refreshing form of travel from Jersey in 2025, but despite growing popularity and resounding word-of-mouth recommendation, some local misconceptions about direct travel remain.

We sat down with Rebecca Larsson, sales and marketing manager at FlyDirect, to bust some of the more commonly heard myths.

‘Flying Direct is always more expensive than flying via the UK’

While we never claim to compete with the big budget airlines, at FlyDirect we conduct regular price comparisons with flights and holidays travelling from, or via, the UK to all our destinations, and more and more often our prices come out the same or even less for comparable flights and holidays. This is especially the case when baggage charges and overnight stays are taken into account. In addition, discounts of between £50 and £200 per child are now offered on all our flights, including those taken during school holidays.

‘You have to pay extra for baggage’

At least 18kg of checked luggage, plus a carry-on bag, is included in the price of all our flights. Travelling with an infant? You can check in a 10kg bag and up to two pieces of equipment (ie a car seat and pushchair) for the babies as well. We carry sports equipment on many of our flights at £60 return, and on selected winter sun departures, we carry them free of charge.

‘You have to pay in full upfront’

Our deposits start from just £150 per person and balances are due eight weeks prior to travel. It’s possible to pay in regular instalments if you prefer.

‘Direct flights are on slower propeller aircraft’

All of FlyDirect’s flights are operated on comfortable modern jet aircraft. We currently work with BA Cityflyer for our summer programme, and Smartwings during the winter. Our flight durations to Majorca and Ibiza average just over 90 minutes, while Tenerife is four hours away.

‘They only operate a few times a year’

In 2025 we have operated for 47 weeks of the year from Jersey, with just a short break from mid-November to mid-December. Through the summer months from April to October, we have a choice of at least two destinations most weeks.

‘They only sell flights and we like to book a package’

We work with international accommodation provider Hotelbeds to offer a wide range of accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets in all of our destinations. These can be packaged together with our flights and transfers if required to create a full financially protected holiday.

‘I want to fly one-way and they only offer return flights’

One-way seats are available on almost all FlyDirect flights, subject to availability, and you can book online, just as you can for return flights and holidays.

‘They’re always on weekdays’

All FlyDirect departures from Jersey for the remainder of 2025 and throughout 2026 take place on a Saturday. Durations of seven, 14 or even more nights are possible, subject to availability.
