THIS week’s Crypto Corner focuses on fine art and non-fungible tokens and their utility in the world of art.
The BiPS foundation has commissioned a piece of art and NFT counterpart of David Bowie’s (Ziggy Stardust) to bring the maverick’s beyond-his-time energy to the crypto world.
Art, like many valuable assets, revolves around a simple rule – scarcity. One-off original pieces of art are valuable because they can only be owned by one person at any single time. NFTs upset the balance of this rule by enabling many to own either a part or a whole original artwork.
We believe the combination of owning one physical and one digital NFT artwork is the future of the art market and, as such, there is only one NFT of Ziggy BiPS.
The singer-songwriter, best known for his works such as Space Oddity, Under Pressure and Starman, once famously said about the internet, “It’s an alien life form”, when questioned by Paxman, a BBC TV presenter, in the early days of the web.
A visionary in more than just music, Ziggy Stardust could see the immense potential many could not. He didn’t confine his mind to a box but rather questioned and recreated the dimensions of the box in his mind. Bowie’s stage name, Ziggy Stardust, probably would have been a crypto enthusiast and would have celebrated the immense potential of decentralised finance and its transformative effects.
We at the BiPS Foundation celebrate the outliers, from Da Vinci to Bowie. History is littered with misfits who sought to think beyond the crowd. That’s why we are pleased to announce we have commissioned a one-of-a-kind artwork reflecting the fragility of fiat currency in the crypto age, with the face of the Starman himself, Mr David Bowie (Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters), an honour bestowed upon him by France.
BVI-based SUPERLUXE.io have delivered the NFT commissioned from its London-based British contemporary artist Metin Salih through its art platform. The NFT will be up for sale to the highest bidder, with all proceeds being donated to The Listening Lounge to promote its therapeutic work.
