In 2024, the Channel Islands Financial Ombudsman received 65 fraud complaints, up from 22 in 2023 – a 195% increase. 

Fraud is getting smarter. Scammers are using AI to fake voices, emails, and websites that can be hard to spot from the real thing.  

It’s not just a global problem – it’s happening right here in Jersey.  

Nobody is immune. Fraudsters are targeting people of all ages and backgrounds and know how to manipulate others, including by:  

  • creating a false sense of urgency
  • impersonating trusted organisations and even family members  
  • exploiting people’s fears
  • exploiting people’s desire to help others 

Common scams 

Scam emails and texts, including from fraudsters pretending to be delivery companies, trying to get you to click on malicious links and/or give away personal information.  

Payment fraud, where scammers pretend to be an official body, such as a bank, to try and get you to move money to their account.  

Online investment scams, including cryptocurrency scams, that look professional but are designed to steal your money. 

Romance scams, with fraudsters going on to ask for money after developing an online relationship with the person they’re targeting. 

Three simple ways to protect yourself 

Stop  

Scammers want you to panic. Take a breath. Remember, real companies won’t ask for your PIN, password or tell you to move your money.   

Think twice

Always exercise caution before clicking on links. Had an unexpected call? It’s ok to hang up the phone if something doesn’t feel right. Use a trusted number or website instead.  

Protect yourself

Protect your personal information. Use strong passwords, enable two-factor authentication, and keep your devices updated. Be cautious of anyone claiming to be your bank or the police who asks for sensitive details.
