The team at Skipton International explains how the bank sets out to support local communities and highlights some recent initiatives
SKIPTON International might be known locally as one of the Island’s main mortgage lenders, but the business is also one that likes to support the local community in any way it can.
The Skipton Community Fund was created in 2018 with the intention of assisting smaller not-for-profit projects in the bailiwicks of Guernsey and Jersey where Skipton has offices and, during that time, it has helped numerous smaller charities and good causes.
The Skipton Community Fund committee meets on a quarterly basis to review submissions, and groups have from now until 28 July 2024 to submit an application to be considered for the next quarter of funding.
To apply for a grant from the fund, you must be a non-profit organisation and looking to carry out a project in the Channel Islands to benefit the local community. A project may take the form of an event, exhibition or fundraising scheme. The fund will accept applications for grants from Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney and Sark for an amount up to £5,000 per organisation.
Brightly Jersey is one of those the fund has helped. Wendy Nerac, fundraiser for Brightly Jersey, said: “We were absolutely delighted to have received a grant of £500. The funds will be put towards our Crisis Funding project which will help with the cost of food, baby/toddler items, clothing, white goods etc for children and young people that we support who are under the care of the Children’s Service. Michelle Benest, health care assistant at Jersey Hospice Care, said: “We’re so grateful to Skipton International for helping to fund this amazing project. The memory frames are really important to our patients and their loved ones, giving them an opportunity to create a special memory together. It’s something that families can hold on to after their loved one dies, and they can look back and remember all of those special moments we have the honour of helping to make happen, thanks to Skipton’s generosity.”
Skipton’s chief executive, Jim Coupe, added: “We are guided by a social purpose and aim to make our communities better places to live. We donate thousands of pounds each year to charities and good causes through our Skipton Community Fund and will continue to do so in the future.”
