ANDIUM tenants have been reminded not to install pet enclosures or other structures on balconies because they could pose a fire risk and obstruct emergency access.
The housing provider issued a statement to residents after identifying a small number of balconies with pet enclosures which breached tenancy agreements and local laws.
Those residents have been contacted, told why the structures are prohibited and given time to remove them.
A spokesperson from Andium Homes said: “The policy applies to all Andium developments, and no permission has been given to install such structures.”
However, the housing provider stressed that the warning was not intended to prevent tenants from keeping pets or allowing them onto balconies.
“This policy is not about pets or restricting any tenant’s enjoyment of their balcony. It is about ensuring that structures on balconies do not create fire risks, block emergency access or affect the safety of residents and emergency responders.”
Chief asset strategy officer Michael Ruane said: “We understand how important pets are to many residents and we want people to be able to enjoy their homes. At the same time, we have a responsibility to keep our buildings safe for everyone who lives in them.”
The States of Jersey Fire and Rescue Service said structures including “catios”, netting, screening and timber additions could undermine buildings’ fire-safety measures.
The force said: “Failure to maintain balconies in a manner that safeguards against the external spread of fire may place residents, neighbouring properties, and attending firefighters at increased risk.”
Andium said it welcomed pets provided they did not cause a nuisance to others.
