ISLANDERS have been warned about a rise in vehicle crime – with the States police urging drivers to lock their cars and take their keys with them “to deter criminals”.
The force’s reminder comes after a car was recently found crashed in St Ouen.
Two boys (aged 18 and 17) and two girls (aged 15 and 13) have been arrested on suspicion of taking or driving a vehicle without the owner’s consent.
The force has said it is seeking to identify a third male in relation to the incident and would like to speak to anyone who may have information.
In December, Inspector David Turnbull reminded Islanders to “lock it or lose it” following a spate of vehicle thefts where the keys had been left inside the cars.
Detective Chief Inspector Mark Hafey said: “We’re seeing increasing numbers of vehicle crime, including stolen vehicles, and thefts from parked cars.”
He continued: “Although we live on a very safe Island, there are individuals who choose to commit crimes, let’s not make it easy for them.
“Islanders must take precautions to prevent these criminals from stealing items and causing damage.
“We all have a responsibility to keep our possessions secure, and this includes our cars. The SOJP urges Islanders to lock their cars and take their keys with them.
“Leaving cars unlocked with keys in the ignition, under the mat, or in the visor makes it easier for criminals to target them.
“Please work with us to deter criminals and make their lives more difficult.”
