Muriel Mavis Double died after suffering a cardiac arrest on 20 April 2016 following gallbladder surgery, an inquest heard.
During the inquest Mrs Double’s family raised concerns about the level of care the grandmother received in the Hospital following her surgery.
And it also emerged that a report looking at any potential injuries which can occur during gallbladder surgery and how they can be dealt with is to be produced by Hospital surgeons within the next three months.
Mrs Double was admitted to the Hospital on 11 April to undergo gallbladder surgery. She was discharged three days later but was readmitted on 17 April with abdominal pain.
Doctors diagnosed that Mrs Double was suffering from a bile leak, a rare result of gallbladder surgery which affects one in 350 individuals, and was put on an intravenous drip. Professor William Roach, pathologist for Southampton Hospital, said he thought it would have been unlikely Mrs Double would have survived further surgery to stop the leakage.
A Serious Investigation Reporting Panel found that the surgery was performed adequately but recommended that Mrs Double’s case be reviewed at a meeting in June and also called for a report outlining complications that can arise from gallbladder surgery to be drawn up.
