The 80-year-old businessman’s proposals had faced opposition from some residents, who wanted Our Lady of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church to be turned into a community centre.
However, yesterday the plans were unanimously approved by the Planning Committee, with one member of the panel saying that the scheme would create ‘an important community amenity’.
Speaking after the meeting, Sir David – who made his fortune in the property industry – said that he expected building work to begin immediately and that he hoped Islanders would be able to move into the properties next year.
