ISLANDERS and businesses donated 657 Christmas gifts this year for children and young people who have been in the social-care system, as part of an initiative organised by a local café that supports survivors of sexual abuse.
The Butterfly Café Christmas toy and gift appeal, now in its fourth year and led by chief executive Cheyenne O’Connor, co-ordinated donations through an Amazon wish list and a “significant” private donation.
The gifts, which have been wrapped and organised into age group categories up to 25-years-old, will be distributed to children in care, children in need and care leavers by staff across the Children, Young People and Families Department.
Ms O’Connor said: “We have been overwhelmed with the support of the community alongside local businesses who have contributed, as well as those who have donated money.”
