When the doors closed at dusk on Sunday the charity had raised £17,000, £3,500 more than last year’s sale.
‘It was absolutely great and everyone who gave us books for the sale can be satisfied that they were bought by people who will enjoy reading them,’ charity chairman Ken Syvret said.
‘The place is vast but it was so chock-a-block on Saturday from 10 am to 12 pm that it was just solid with people.’
When the organisers opened the doors at Albert Bartlett’s local headquarters in Trinity Hill at 9 am on Saturday, more than 60 Islanders had formed an orderly queue to snap up the best reads.
Mr Syvret said they were able to choose from more than 15,000 books on just about every subject from architecture to wine and for all interests from children learning to read to academics.
Rare and collectable books were not included in the two-day sale. They were displayed with reserve prices and bids were invited to raise as much money as possible.
