Jersey Live organisers raise concerns over charges for police security

Warren Le Sueur, one half of the duo behind Jersey Live, said he did not agree with plans announced this week which could enable the States police to charge for policing commercial events, and he is also concerned that other States services may follow the police’s lead and begin charging too.

Law draftsmen are currently working on legislation which would allow the States police to bill people, and the force has said it would look to ‘national best practice’ when setting out a charging framework.

Chief Inspector James Wileman said it was too early to say what events may, if legislation is introduced, be subject to charges, adding that policing was funded by the taxpayer, so the force had a duty to recover costs where possible.
