The Law Officers’ Department says the delay is being caused by the listing of several trials which are expected to last a number of weeks and the fact that the Island only has one room in the Royal Court available for jury trials.
A spokesman for the department said criminal cases were tried more quickly in Jersey than other ‘comparable jurisdictions’.
‘We are currently experiencing what is anticipated to be a temporary increase in the number of cases being committed to the Royal Court for trial which need to be tried by jury,’ he said.
‘There is only one courtroom in the Royal Court able to accommodate a jury, so this has led to trials taking longer to list than usual.
