St Helier looking to launch Madeira wildfire aid appeal

Six years after Islanders raised more than £100,000 to help Madeirans affected by floods which killed 42 people and left 600 homeless a fresh fundraising appeal is being considered after fires tore through parts of the captial, Funchal.

Simon Crowcroft, whose parish is twinned with Funchal, has already had several approaches from Islanders who are keen to help with raising money.

Meanwhile, Davide Pita, who runs the Davide Pita foundation, which was set up in 2014 to raise money for local charities through sporting events, said that he intended to launch a fundraising campaign.
