The defendant said that he vandalised the Esplanade branch of HSBC and the main Royal Bank of Scotland International premises off Bath Street because he was angry about the treatment of protesters by security contractors at the Standing Rock rally against the Dakota Access oil pipeline.
The $3.7 billion pipeline project aims to transport crude oil from the Bakken oil field in North Dakota to a refinery at Patoka, Illinois, near Chicago.
The 48-year-old told the court that he wanted to highlight the plight of the native Americans.
