A planning application has been submitted by the JSPCA to redevelop a site at Rue des Touettes in St Mary and under the plans, an old dairy unit at La Pepinière Farm, which has not been used for more than a decade, would be redeveloped into an animal shelter to house approximately 80 dogs, including homeless and boarding dogs that need kennels while their owners are away on holiday.
The JSPCA, which has been looking for a second site for 30 years, said expansion at its current home in St Saviour’s Road was not an option because of the modern needs of animal welfare and the current urbanisation of the surrounding area for housing.
Planning permission has already been granted for its current kennels, which have room for 60 dogs, to be redeveloped into three-bedroom lifelong homes which would be built at the same time as the new shelter and the JSPCA will keep its headquarters at St Saviour’s Road.
